Asian Journalism

About Us

The Asian Educational and Research and Development Institute on Journalism and Communication in the Philippines.

A non-stock, non-profit corporation committed to development and application of Journalism and Communication for Sustainable Development.

For the AIJC, journalism is both a business and a public service. While its first concern is to survive as a profitable enterprise, it derives meaning for its existence from its mission to serve society. A unique feature of the AIJC is its being able to sustain and even expand operations and provide quality graduate education not through school fees but through its various revenue-generating programs and projects, particularly research and consultancy .

Started in 1980, the AIJC was first envisioned to provide a journalism school for a new breed of journalists in the Philippines and Asia who are able to give equal emphasis on development issues and concerns. The Institute was one of the pioneers in promoting the philosophy of development journalism while remaining committed to the tenets of press freedom.

During its initial years, the AIJC leadership realized that classroom learning is not enough to develop competent communication professionals. To provide practical and relevant learnings which will address present and future needs, the Institute has embarked into research and consultancy, networking and extension, and multimedia production, among others. Learnings from these activities are integrated into the curriculum. Students are also involved in these programs or projects as research associates and consultants. To date, the AIJC has emerged as a "think and do" tank in communication media and development. Over the years, it has made significant contributions in terms of new knowledge in communication and development.
